Scientific Course on the Benefits of Propolis in Pharmaceutical Industries and Alternative Medicine

Under the patronage of the President of the Northern Technical University, Professor Dr. Aliaa Abbas Ali Al-Attar, and under the guidance of the Dean of the Medical Technical Institute / Mosul, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Fadhil Hameed Haddad, and as part of the scientific plan activities of the Department of Pharmacy Techniques, the department—in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit—organized a scientific course titled: “The Benefits of Propolis (Bee Glue).”

The course was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Labib Hassoun Abdullah, Dr. Ahmed Abdulsalam Mohammed, and Lec. Wael Munir Mohammed Sadiq. During the sessions, they provided a comprehensive definition of Propolis as a “natural antibiotic,” explaining its chemical composition which combines resins, wax, and essential oils, in addition to powerful antioxidant “flavonoid” compounds.

The course aimed to highlight the vital importance of this substance in promoting public health and to familiarize participants with its therapeutic properties as an immune system stimulant and a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. Furthermore, it emphasized Propolis as a primary pillar in the formulation of many modern pharmaceutical products and alternative medicine techniques.

The sessions included a review of the various types of Propolis according to their geographical sources (such as Green, Red, and Brown), with a detailed explanation of its biological mechanism within the beehive to provide a completely sterile environment for protecting the queen and larvae, and how to invest these properties in pharmaceutical innovations.

This course is part of a series of scientific activities through which the University and the Institute seek to develop the cognitive and technical skills of staff and students, keeping pace with the latest global trends in utilizing natural resources in pharmaceutical sciences.
